FORT BRAGG — The results are in! No, not the vote count from the national election — that might take a while. This was something much more fun: The winners of the Noyo Center’s first-ever “‘Sea’ You in Costume” Halloween photo competition.
It’s no secret that this was no ordinary Halloween. Worried about COVID-19, everyone had to adapt. The City of Fort Bragg did an amazing job of organizing a daytime drive-by Trunk or Treat vehicle parade on Halloween afternoon that gave droves of costumed kids an opportunity to experience the day in Covid-safe conditions. Other organizations also found ways to provide some Covid-safe fun.
What a testament to ingenuity and adaptability!
The Noyo Center for Marine Science also did its part, albeit with a twist. To help promote marine education, the Center held an online photo competition for kids and adults of all ages to submit photos of themselves in sea creature-themed costumes.
The contest was held for a range of age groups and creature categories. A stalwart handful of area residents rose to the challenge, did their homework, put their creativity into high gear, and decked out their kids and themselves in their own renditions of a lobster, a tamatoa crab, a deep ocean lantern fish, a shark and more. We bet they all learned something and had a lot of fun.
While that glorious October full moon shone down on mostly empty streets, the north Coast community found ways to keep the Halloween tradition alive. Lots of kids got to dress up as their favorite characters and earn some candy. And at the very least, some of them got to learn something new about ocean creatures and will have a photo of themselves that will help them remember Halloween 2020 for years to come.
The Noyo Center appreciates the efforts and creativity of the participating families in this experiment on how to keep good times alive while promoting education during this time of COVID-19.
There will be more such experiments in future and the Noyo Center welcomes everyone to join the fun.
