The Lehigh Valley’s Miller-Keystone Blood Center is urgently seeking blood donations from all blood types.
The Bethlehem area-based center typically has a slower summer season, but the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed it even more, according to a news release. The blood center has lost out on hundreds of previously scheduled blood drives, resulting in the loss of about 10,000 donations between March and July. Usually, the start of school signifies an upswing in drives and donations, but with many schools in a hybrid model and socially distancing, those drives aren’t able to happen.
The center’s release said that the community’s blood supply was already at critical levels.
Cancer patients, accident victims, premature infants and others in need of blood typically require a total of 450 donors each day. The release noted that multiple trauma patients at the center’s regional hospitals will require more transfusions in the coming days in addition to the several hundred units of blood, platelets and plasma they’ve already received.
Because of social distancing, the center can only do scheduled appointments at the moment. You can schedule a donation at the center’s website, giveapint.org.
The center has three Lehigh Valley locations, as well as other locations across eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Allentown Donor Center is at 1255 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Suite 1300; the Bethlehem location is at 1465 Valley Center Parkway; and the Easton location is at 2925 William Penn Highway, Suite 105. Each locations hours vary and can be found on the blood center’s website. While all locations are typically closed on Sundays, the Bethlehem and Reading locations will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11.
Donors must be 16 years of age or older and weigh at least 110 pounds. They must be feeling healthy and can’t have donated in the last eight weeks.
