INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- After closing the Civic Center due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Independence had a partial reopening of the facility in June. The city now plans to reopen the Fieldhouse and extend the hours of operation at the Civic Center, starting in November.
All services at the Civic Center that were already available will remain open, including the pools, weight rooms, track and cardio equipment. Recreation Director Tom Walchanowicz said the Fieldhouse will be reopened starting Monday, Nov. 2. Hours will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
With the reopening comes new restrictions, as well. The Fieldhouse will only be open to residents of Independence for use of the pickleball courts and individual walking. Teams that are verified as resident-only may schedule practices at the Fieldhouse two weeks in advance, for two practices a week.
An email sent by Eric Sarley, program director for the Recreation Department, stated, “Once the Fieldhouse reopens, we would like to schedule team practices exclusively at the Fieldhouse to keep the Civic Center gym open and accessible to the public.”
Walchanowicz said that while using the Fieldhouse, residents are required to wear masks unless working out strenuously. Social distancing is also encouraged, and parents with strollers will be permitted to walk on the track.
With the weather beginning to change, Walchanowicz said the department “saw the need for people to get out and walk or jog. The Fieldhouse is a place to do that, and we need a venue for that rather than having more people in the Civic Center.”
The Recreation Department may add evening hours on Mondays and Fridays later in November, but Walchanowicz said it depends on mandates from the governor’s office as well as the weather. He said the Fieldhouse is not as busy on days when the weather is nice enough to be outdoors.
Weekend hours may be added at the Fieldhouse, but will be dependent upon resident need, according to Walchanowicz.
In addition, the Civic Center will be extending its hours on the weekends, with new hours being 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays, starting in November.
Walchanowicz said having more available time slots will spread out the number of people who visit the Civic Center and provide more convenient hours.
Indoor pool lane reservation times have also been adjusted to accommodate for additional lanes, swim teams, aquatic classes and extended hours, according to Sarley’s email. Lanes one, two, three and four will be for lap swimming, with a maximum of two people from the same household, while lanes five and six will be group lanes with up to 10 people maximum from the same household.
The lobby of the Civic Center will remain closed to avoid groups of people congregating. Walchanowicz said staff members consistently sanitize high-touch areas throughout the rest of the Civic Center and the bathrooms are cleaned every two hours.
The Community Services Department within the Civic Center will reopen with limited capacity on Nov. 9. Walchanowicz said the department will begin showing movies in the Willow Room and plan to start holding Bingo for residents again.
Walchanowicz said that if Cuyahoga County reaches “purple threat level” as classified by Gov. Mike DeWine, the Recreation Department will look at postponing team practices and programs.
“(We will) try to keep going as long as we are allowed,” he said.
