WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Valley Center High School is moving all of its students to remote learning due to a spike in local COVID-19 cases. The school district said it’s "experiencing a spike in the number of staff, students, and their families being directly impacted by the COVID-19 virus. As a result, the district said the high school will be closed Friday (Oct. 30) when all high school students will follow the remote-learning-day schedule.

The move to remote learning comes with the cancelation of Valley Center’s scheduled varsity high school football game against Bishop Carroll. The district said at least seven VCHS football players and coaches have tested positive for COVID-19 and other team members are being tested because they have symptoms associated with the virus.

“Given these circumstances and in collaboration with VCHS administration, the high school coaching staff, officials from BCCHS, the Kansas State High School Activities Association, and the Sedgwick County Health Department, we have made the difficult decision to not play Friday night’s game,” a message from Valley Center Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Cory Gibson said.

Dr. Gibson said factors considered included the safety of Valley Center’s remaining players, the “desire to decrease the potential exposure to other athletes and coaches from VCHS and Bishop Carroll, and to limit the possible spread of the virus in (the) schools and community, as well as in the Bishop Carroll school and community.”

“We understand this is disappointing news. As much as we wanted to play the game and as important as playing is to our athletes and coaches, their families, and our community, we believe the health and safety of our students and staff must take precedence. Not only have we seen an increase in the number of cases at VCHS, but also within the communities we serve,” Dr. Gibson’s message said.

VCHS Head Football Coach Scott L’Eculyer said ending an overall successful season early due to COVID-19 “is a bitter pill to swallow.”

“But when we look at it, I think in hindsight when everything settles down, I think we will be pretty proud of what we have accomplished,” he said.

The Hornets finished the 2020 season with a 5-3 record, matching their win total of the previous two seasons combined.

With uncertainty surrounding every team in Kansas this season, Bishop Carroll Athletic Director Tyler Frazier said this is a situation they were prepared for.

“We go through these conversations all the time for fall sports, knowing that it’s always a possibility. YOu just never think it’s going to impact you,” Frazier said.
