ORANGE — E-commerce giant Amazon is opening a new distribution facility this week on the Boston Post Road, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The 114,500-square-foot delivery center at 48 Boston Post Road is on the site of two former big-box retail stores near the town’s border with West Haven. Emily Hawkins, an Amazon spokeswoman, said the new facility will employ more than 100 full- and part-time employees, with additional employment opportunities for people driving delivery vehicles.
In Amazon’s distribution network model, delivery centers represent the last mile of the process of getting packages to customers, according to Hawkins. Packages are shipped to delivery stations from Amazon Fulfillment and Sortation Centers, she said.
In all, the company has more than 3 million square feet in 10 communities across the state. Much of the company’s focus in developing distribution infrastructure has been on the New Haven area.
In addition to the new delivery center in Orange, the company has fulfillment centers on Research Parkway in Wallingford and off Washington Avenue in North Haven. The company already has delivery stations in Trumbull and Stratford.
Amazon has created more than 8,500 jobs in Connecticut since 2010 and invested more than $2.1 billion across the state, including infrastructure and compensation, Hawkins said. Workers at the new Amazon facility in Orange are being paid at least $15 per hour.
Amazon’s announcement that the delivery center is opening this week came after months of speculation about whom the facility was being developed for. Nondisclosure agreements prevented town officials from identifying Amazon as the tenant for the new facility.
The delivery center is located on the site of a former Sam’s Club and Lowe’s location. The Sam’s Club store closed in January 2018 and Lowe’s closed nearly a year later.
