DeWitt, N.Y. — The builder of an e-commerce distribution center widely believed to be for Amazon is wasting no time getting started after receiving approvals from the town of DeWitt.

Montante Construction has begun clearing the 42-acre site at the southeast corner of Interstate 690 and Kirkville Road where the 112,000-square-foot facility will be built.

The DeWitt Planning Board voted 6-0 on July 9 to approve Montante’s site plan for the property. A representative of the builder told the board the company wants to have the building completed in the first half of 2021.

Montante has not said who will operate the distribution center, calling it by the code name “Project Orange.” And Amazon has not confirmed that it will be the tenant.

“We are constantly exploring new locations and weighing a variety of factors when deciding where to develop sites to best serve customers,” a spokesperson for the online retail giant said in a statement to syracuse.com this week. “However, Amazon has a policy of not commenting on our future roadmap.”

However, local officials are pretty certain the tenant will be Amazon.

When county lawmakers rushed last month to complete an environmental review of the project, they said it was to allow Montante to fast-track the development so it could be finished around the same time as a much larger regional fulfillment center being built by Trammell Crow Co. for Amazon in Clay. The smaller center will complement the larger one, they said.

Consumer goods will be delivered to homes and businesses from the DeWitt facility, according to Montante. The center will operate 24 hours a day and employ 200 people.

The project will require the widening of Kirkville Road to allow for the addition of left-turn lanes into the distribution center and to Roberts Street, and a second eastbound through lane. Planning Board officials said Montante will pay the entire cost of the road work.
