In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Quebec government has requested to cancel all local events scheduled until Aug. 31. The Montreal Impact then issued a statement Friday night to clarify how it could shape the since-suspended 2020 Major League Soccer season.

“The Montreal Impact has been made aware this afternoon of the government of Quebec’s request to cancel all events scheduled until August 31, 2020,” the statement read. “However, the Ministry of Tourism specified that this request is not addressed to professional sports leagues.

“Our return to play and the resumption of activities for the 2020 season will be dictated by MLS, along with public health authorities. The Impact continues to monitor the situation very closely daily, in order to protect the health of its supporters, players, staff and partners.”

Before the soccer world was put on pause, Montreal were 1-0-1 in league play and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League against Olimpia. They’re in the first year under head coach Thierry Henry, and had just signed midfielder Victor Wanyama as a Designated Player.
