18th Street Arts Center presents its annual benefit event, a virtual evening of video arts, experimental film, musical performance, and mini-documentaries about three iconic LA honorees. With a video program curated by Asha Bukojemsky, the evening honors essential art workers evolving well-being, culture, and community life in Los Angeles. The hour-long program includes musical performances from host Shirazette Tinnin, and video work from Alison O’Daniel, Pau S. Pescador, Kenneth Tam, and Rodrigo Valenzuela. A limited edition print from Valenzuela, co-published with El Nopal Press, will also be available for purchase for $350.
The 2021 Virtual Gala will also honor arts and culture workers who have contributed dramatically to community and cultural life in Los Angeles over their careers. We will be producing mini-documentaries in collaboration with the honorees about their work, and are pleased to be featuring:
Kristina Wong – performance artist and founder, Auntie Sewing Squad
Asuka Hisa – artist, educator, curator
Bill and Carolyne Edwards – founders Quinn Research Center + Archive
The film program entitled Missing Parts, curated by Asha Bukojemsky, will feature four artists who likewise take community connections as both theme and process for their work. As Bukojemsky writes in her curatorial framing, these films both challenge and encourage a reckoning around our country’s construction of self.
Curated selections of the artists’ work will be presented as part of the hour-long gala program, and the full films will be available to all gala ticket holders for two full weeks after the event.
The program will kick off with musical performances from jazz drummer and host Shirazette Tinnin. Access to the gala, along with a variety of additional benefits, will be available to everyone who joins 18th Street’s new Borderless membership platform on Patreon as a subscriber.
The event will benefit 18th Street Arts Center’s work to empower artists and working families to organize, create culture together, and impact society.
