Washington hospitals at capacity

The Washington Department of Health reported Sept. 8 that hospital bed capacity across the state is stressed and health officials are monitoring the situation closely.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, six hospitals in King County are operating at 90% bed capacity or above. In the surrounding area, 10 other hospitals are experiencing high bed-occupancy loads in cities such as Tacoma, Wenatchee, Everett and Puyallup. This data comes from the seven-day average of bed occupancy of Washington hospitals for the week of Sept. 3.

St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor is operating at 100% capacity with all 108 inpatient hospital beds in use and 14 of its 16 ICU beds occupied by patients. St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood is operating at 99% capacity with all of its 104 inpatient hospital beds in use and nine of their 10 ICU beds occupied by patients.

According to DOH, hospitals continue to fill up with unvaccinated people, who make up 94% of current COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations.

Despite COVID-19 vaccines being free and accessible, tens of millions of people in the U.S. are resisting them. In hopes of stopping the rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths across the U.S., the White House issued an executive order Sept. 9 requiring all federal employees be vaccinated or risk termination. This new mandate could affect as many as 100 million American workers including private-sector companies with 100 employees or more as well as health care workers and federal contractors.

White Center withstands another fire

Early Monday morning on Sept. 13, a three-alarm fire broke out at the Locker Room Tavern in White Center. The cause appeared to be discarded smoking material, according to fire investigators.

White Center Now reported no injuries as of 6:30 a.m. that day. The blog has had plenty of practice reporting on fires: This is the third major commercial-building fire in White Center in a little over two months, and the second this year at the Locker Room Tavern. The tavern has been closed since April when it caught fire. That fire was ruled an accident. None of the neighboring businesses were damaged.

On July 5, a two-alarm fire ripped through eight businesses in the neighborhood’s retail core. Initially, investigators said the fire was most likely caused by an electrical issue in the basement of The Lumber Yard Bar, a LGBTQ+ bar. It was later reclassified as arson and the owners believe it was a hate crime.

On Sept. 1, a vacant building that people lived in, according to people who worked in neighboring businesses, became a pile of charred debris in a two-alarm fire.

This time, Full Tilt Ice Cream two doors down reported water damage and Huong Xua Deli next door was damaged too.
