Johns Hopkins University has begun demolition of the three-building arts center on its Homewood campus to make way for a $250 million project called the Hopkins Student Center.
Mattin Center was designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, designers of the Barack Obama Presidential Center & Library and other cultural projects, and opened near the intersection of Charles and 33rd streets 2001. Another building near Mattin Center, Whitehead Hall, is also coming down to make way for construction.
Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group, the Rockwell Group and Shepley Bulfinch, the new 150,000-square-foot student center is expected to open in the fall of 2024. According to the JHU Hub news site, it will provide space for 400 student organizations plus multi-purpose spaces, lounges, places to eat and areas for extracurricular arts programs and other activities.
Clark Construction, the construction manager, has installed fencing around the perimeter of the construction site. Southbound traffic on Charles Street has been detoured at 33rd Street to St. Paul Street while construction is underway.
