Dozens gathered at Nashe Mesta Park in Vacaville’s Brighton Landing neighborhood Friday to enjoy food, fun and celebrate progress of Kairos Public Schools’ school expansion.
As students scampered around the playground during the Kairos Innovative Scholars Program annual picnic, parents and education officials perused renderings of two phases of the planned Kairos campus. It will be located just beyond the park, on 11 acres owned by the school.
Jared Austin, Kairos co-founder and executive director, detailed the soon-to-be 11,000 square foot learning center complete with ample bells and whistles.
“It’s making a permanent home for our independent study (program),” he said.
Phase 2 will feature space for 500 more students, with plans including a high school.
“Our goal is one day to make this a K-12 campus,” he shared.
Phase 1 is going through the planning and review process with the city. The aim is to break ground in Spring, likely march or April.
“The goal is to have the building built by September-October,” Austin said. “It’s a $7 million project. “We’re very grateful for a check from Silicon Schools Fund … We’re hoping to get more community partners.”
At the event, it was announced that Silicon Schools Fund was granting the school $150,000 for its growth.
Brian Greenberg, CEO of Silicon Schools Fund, said officials with the Oakland-based nonprofit is more than pleased to partner with Kairos.
All of the nonprofit’s members are former educators who care about students, he said.
“Our job is to fund some of the best schools in California and help them thrive,” he advised. He described Kairos as a “stellar” school and said he was excited to be a resource.
“The local schools are doing a great job and deserve (innovative) alternatives,” he said of Vacaville’s school system. “This is going to be a gem to make Vacaville even better.”
