PEORIA (HOI) - The Peoria Civic Center is celebrating the return of live events, which the mayor said on Thursday is key to the area's economic recovery from the COVID-10 pandemic.
"We're back," was the message from Civic Center staff and city leaders as the public is welcomed back to a venue that's been closed for more than 500 days because of the pandemic.
Events kick off Saturday at 11 a.m. with The Basketball Tournament (TBT) in the arena, and a live concert at 8 p.m. from the legendary rock and roll band Chicago in the theatre.
Peoria Mayor Rita Ali says the Civic Center's return is "vital to the recovery of downtown and the Greater Peoria Region."
"This venue is for the community, and with the community's support, the Peoria Civic Center is returning and it will be better than ever," the mayor said.
Face coverings are recommended, but not required for guests who are fully vaccinated. All guests two years and older who are not fully vaccinated are required to wear a mask while attending Civic Center events.
