On Monday afternoon, Jeff Capel called rising big man Shawn Phillips Jr. and offered him a scholarship.
“Coach Jeff Capel called me,” Phillips told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “He said he has been watching me for a while and he likes my game. He said that Pitt needs a big that is of my caliber, and he gave me an offer. He said that he would love for me to play for him someday.”
Pitt just offered 6’11 2022 four star center Shawn Phillips, his coach told @PghSportsNow.

Phillips is a 6-foot-11, 250-pound center who plays his high school ball for Ypsi Prep in Michigan and his AAU ball for Wildcat Select. The Dayton, Ohio native holds offers from a long list of high major programs, including Indiana, NC State, Ohio State, and now Pitt. While he does not know much about Pitt as of now, he said he is looking forward to finding out more as the recruitment process goes on.
“I am always excited when I get an offer,” he said about his reaction to the call. “I just thanked him for giving me the offer and told him we would stay in touch. I don’t know much about Pitt, but I am willing to learn.”
According to 247 Sports’ Composite Rankings, Phillips is the No. 83 player in the nation and the No. 12 center in the nation. The powerful big man excels on the boards and has dominated on both sides of the ball at the high-school level. His strong build and explosive athleticism combine for plenty of rim-rattling dunks, which look like they will surely translate to the college game.
“I would say I am a great back-to-the-basket big, I am a good passer, a good shot blocker, a very good rebounder, and probably a top-five post defender in the country,” Phillips said about his game. “I am still working on my handles and my jump-shot.”
Back in March, he released a top seven of Indiana, Florida, NC State, Ohio State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Dayton, but shortly after he said that his recruitment was 100% open and that he will narrow it again sometime in the future.
“Yes, I will consider Pitt,” he added. My recruitment is still 100% open.”
While it appears that some of the schools recruiting him the hardest are in-state and in other conferences (Ohio State, Dayton, Cincinnati), Phillips did include that he was open to playing in the ACC.
“Everyone knows about the ACC,” he added. “It is one of the best conferences in college basketball. That’s not a bad conference to play in at all.”
Phillips said he is going to try and set up a visit soon, and he also included that he will not reclassify to 2021.
