RUSHVILLE — Rushville Fitness and Community Center will have its grand opening from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at 120 Rodewald Drive.
The center includes a community room, a 4,000-square-foot exercise room, an indoor walking track, an indoor pool and a gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, soccer and other sports.
Tim Ward, president of the center, said the new, 30,000-square-foot facility was built between 2018 and 2019 after research and a site search began in 2016.
While the possibility of refurbishing an existing building was considered, it was difficult to find a building large enough, Ward said, noting that those found were going to be costly to renovate.
A community survey in summer 2016 drew more than 1,000 responses from people offering ideas about what they would like to see in the facility, Ward said.
The facility was designed and built based on that community response and need.
Work with Morton Buildings started in 2017, with the general contractor determining it would be cheaper to build a new facility that also would be more energy efficient.
The facility is something completely new to Rushville, Ward said, noting the community lacked a place to go for fitness before the facility was built.
The generosity of an anonymous donor helped make the facility a reality, Ward said.
“We have truly been blessed by an anonymous donor who gifted the money to the community to build this,” he said.
The $7 million facility has solar panels, in keeping with the primary donor’s desire for an energy-efficient building, Ward said.
The center was featured on this week’s episode of the PBS series “Illinois Stories.”
