Summer People’s Market opens at The Center Park - Buckrail

JACKSON, Wyo, — The People’s Market summer season is underway atop the grassy lawn at the Center for the Arts. The Market moved from its previous home at Snow King Ball Park because of construction closures, and organizers at Slow Food in the Tetons have embraced this new venue as a chance to engage with a downtown audience.

“The summer closure at Snow King presented a challenge,” said Scott Steen, Executive Director of Slow Food in the Tetons. “As we entered into the planning process with Center for the Arts, we quickly realized the potential this move held for growing new partnerships and collaborations within the community and local food system.”

The Center welcomes the partnership. “We are thrilled to host the People’s Market in The Center Park this summer,” said Marty Camino, Executive Director of Center for the Arts.

“The weekly People’s Markets are such a welcome addition to the variety of events happening on our campus. Each market is a great community gathering, and The Center Park is an excellent central location for them. We are very focused on providing a safe and comfortable outdoor space for our community to begin gathering again here at The Center.”

Multi-year partner Wind River Capital Management also continues to play an integral role in supporting the People’s Market. “We’re big proponents of what Slow Food has done and continues to do for our community and local food system,” said Cody Lockhart. As a sixth-generation local rancher, Lockhart can attest to the value of a strong connection between food and community.

“The People’s Market proved successful during the challenges of 2020 as an enduring resource for farmers and ranchers and a community that relies on fresh, healthy, local food. We appreciate their efforts to keep us connected to our local growers and producers, and to bring us together again this summer.”

The venue isn’t the only change at the People’s Market this summer. Participants will also see the return of market offerings that were curtailed in 2020 due to COVID. In addition to favorite farm, ranch and local food offerings, this year’s lineup will include the return of prepared food and beverages for on-site picnicking, music to enjoy while dining, weekly featured non-profits, and a section of non-food booths for local artisans and other specialties.

“The zero waste initiative is back online this summer,” promised Slow Food Communications and Outreach Manager, Mari Allan Hanna. The market will once again be equipped with reusable plates, bowls, cutlery and cups, and the Zero Waste Station to reuse, recycle and compost as much as possible. “We’re hoping to surpass the 84% waste diversion rate we achieved two summers ago.”

Slow Food in the Tetons looks forward to seeing everyone at the markets on Wednesdays through September 22, 4-7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bike, walk or ride with START Bus to The Center Park. No dogs please!

Additional opportunities to purchase local and regional food will be available throughout the summer at the Slow Food Farm Stand and Online Marketplace. Watch for announcements via tetonslowfood.org and social media.
