The Fines & Fees Justice Center (FFJC) is a national center for advocacy, policy, information, and collaboration on effective solutions to the unjust and harmful imposition and enforcement of fines and fees in the criminal legal justice system. FFJC’s mission is to end abusive collection practices, eliminate fees in the criminal legal justice system, and make fines proportional to the offense and the individual. FFJC works with impacted communities, advocates, and justice system stakeholders to create an equitably-funded justice system that treats individuals fairly and ensures public safety.

New Mexico Deputy Director
Position Summary
The Deputy Director will be responsible for investigation, research, writing, and project management to advance campaigns for fines and fees reform in New Mexico. Under the direction of the New Mexico State Director, the Deputy Director will identify, collect, and analyze data on the imposition and collection of fines and fees in New Mexico to understand the impacts on local and state governments, and on individuals. In coordination with FFJC’s New Mexico Advisory Board on Fines and Fees, the Deputy Director will also play a leading role working with people impacted by fines and fees to identify harmful policies and potential solutions. The Deputy Director will work with the State Director and partner organizations to organize campaign events, develop talking points and advocacy materials, and build relationships with other organizations to support campaigns for fines and fees reform in New Mexico. The Deputy Director will contribute to strategy development and leadership commensurate with experience level.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
- Conduct research, including public record requests, collection/analysis of court, budget and agency data
- Translate internal and external research into reports, talking points and other campaign materials
- In coordination with FFJC’s NM advisory board, identify, interview, survey and maintain relationships with impacted individuals
- Organize events to educate on fines and fees reform issues
- Help develop policy reform strategy
- Support local community leaders in advocating for fines and fees reform
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in public policy, public finance, criminal justice, journalism or other graduate degree, and at least one year of experience in data analysis, research, communications, or advocacy (focus on criminal justice, economic justice or racial justice preferred) OR college degree and at least three years’ relevant experience
- Excellent investigative and research skills
- Excellent writing skills, with ability to write persuasively for a variety of different audiences
- Excellent project management skills
- Ability to work with diverse communities
- Sense of humor
- Commitment to develop as a leader in response to feedback and mentoring
- Experience drafting and editing copy for advocacy publications is a plus
- Spanish language ability is a plus
- Knowledge of New Mexico court and/or budget data is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically about criminal justice reform is a plus
- Those who have been personally impacted by the criminal legal system are encouraged to apply
Compensation
$65,000 – $75,000 with a generous vacation and leave policy, and health, dental, and vision insurance, and transportation benefits.
