The Olney Senior Cub Center has always been a huge support structure for the area seniors with a safe place to have an affordable lunch during the week, and also as a place to gather and socialize with others over lunch, a puzzle, bingo, cards and other such activities. The Cub Center also delivers meals to those who are not able to leave their home for lunch for various reasons.
Recently the Cub Center received around $3500 by the Area Agency on Aging to purchase groceries and other household goods, such as cleaning supplies, to be delivered to area seniors in need of help during this time of social distancing and self-quarantining.
Jerri Corbin, Director of the Senior Cub Center, said some seniors are homebound with issues that make it hard for them to leave the home to shop, and others might be short on funds to purchase goods at the grocer. Either way, this helping hand by the Cub Center is as a much-needed help for local seniors around the community of Olney.
Corbin says they were helping about 70 seniors, and logistically speaking, trying to deliver all these groceries in plastic bags was going to be a bit of an issue. That’s when a local restaurant stepped in to help. Lonestar Pizza here in Olney donated all the boxes the Cub Center would need. The community of Olney is always there to step up and help those in need, including local businesses.
Corbin says, “when shopping for goods for the donation boxes to be delivered they focused on things most needed in general like a good mix of cleaning supplies, masks, sanitizers and groceries”.
Corbin wanted to let everyone know that “the Center does a lot of extra things beside delivering a good home cooked meal to seniors and providing a great meal at the Center for seniors”. Corbin went on to say “the Cub Center helps seniors with funding, call seniors daily to check up on them, bring in health care workers to check blood pressure twice a month, presentations on healthcare and how to register and choose plans with Medicare”.
Corbin says the there is really no one to say when its ok to open back up or to stay closed. The Cub Center has plans to open back up soon. Corbin said “seniors are really missing the socialization they get from the Senior Cub Center, talking over the phone is just not the same as sitting face to face and visiting with friends”.
The Cub Center is already hard at work planning for Texoma Gives which takes place in September. Texoma Gives is a big event yearly that promotes giving to charities that help others and helps give charitable organizations a platform to have their voices heard and receive much needed financial help, as well as come in contact with potential new volunteers.
Corbin says the center is always looking for more volunteers to help deliver meals or to help out around the club. For more information you can call the Olney Senior Cub Center at (940) 564-2782 Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
