WESLEY CHAPEL — While the celebration was virtual, turning over shovels full of dirt was real last week as Pasco officials and youth sports leaders broke ground for the long-awaited Wesley Chapel District Park Recreation Center.
The 17,800-square-foot facility, funded through impact fees, will give the community an inside venue for activities including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, summer camps and community events.
“It’s been a long time coming. Our citizens are excited about it. I’m excited about it,‘' said Mike Moore, County Commission chairman and father who has over the years experienced many an evening and weekend enjoying the park with his children. Now new families “will be able to enjoy this indoor facility, another great asset in Pasco County,” he said.
As Moore has noted before, Florida’s heat and storms can be daunting, and the center will provide indoor space to continue recreational activities all year long.
“This is the largest athletic facility the county has in terms of park space,” said Keith Wiley, director of Pasco parks, recreation and environmentally sensitive lands. “This complex completes that package.”
When completed, the building will provide space for many activities including wrestling, volleyball and possibly even competitive cheerleading, said Tom Fitzsimons of the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association. “I can’t wait to see this thing built.”
Opening of the $4 million center is expected in summer 2021.
