Classes meet at picnic shelter No. 3 at Lincoln Park, 120 Euclid Ave. This shelter is close to parking and bathrooms.
Participants must observe social distancing protocols and must have signed a form, which absolves the Senior Center from liability and may be obtained from the class leader.
Attendees are asked to bring chairs and water bottles.
Those who would like to borrow weights from the Senior Center should contact Ranea Johnson, activity director, at (701) 757-4866, or send an email to activity@gfseniorcenter.org. She will bring them to class.
The classes are Chair Yoga, 3 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays; Building Better Balance, 2 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays; Qigong, 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays; and Healthy Bones, 3 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Qigong is a centuries-old system of body posture and movement, breathing and meditation used to promote health and wellness. Its benefits include improving balance, lowering blood pressure and easing depression.
The classes will be canceled if it’s raining or extremely hot.
Even on recent hot and windy days, people have shown up, according to Jami Schumacher, public relations manager for the Senior Center, who said the shady location makes for a comfortable setting.
The Grand Forks Park District has been helpful in this new outdoor exercise option, Schumacher said. “It’s a nice partnership."
Finding alternative ways to serve seniors became a priority for the Senior Center after its building was closed in mid-March when COVID-19 caused a national public health emergency. The building will remain closed at least through Aug. 31.
Seniors represent “our most vulnerable population,” Schumacher said, “so we’ll be the most conservative about reopening.”
The Senior Center is following restrictions set by the state Department of Aging Services and its board of directors, which next meets in mid-August.
Schumacher has been “shocked” to see how few seniors are wearing masks, she said, suggesting that people may be becoming complacent about the pandemic.
“I’m sure it is wearing on seniors, especially those who are following guidelines," she said.
Staff at the Senior Center are planning to call seniors in the next few weeks to assess how they are doing and gauge their level of isolation, she said.
