Denver police say somebody shot a person carrying a weapon — believed to be an ax — at Broadway and Colfax Avenue on Thursday night, near where demonstrators have been gathering for more than a week to seek racial justice in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
But the shooting does not appear to be connected to the protests in any way, Officer R. Saunder told Denver Post reporters at the scene.
The bulk of the remaining marchers from Thursday’s demonstrations were blocks away when the shooting occurred before 10 p.m. As they returned to the Capitol, officers informed them of the nearby shooting.
More than an hour later, people remained gathered on the Capitol steps shouting for Floyd, across the lawn from the crime scene. Blood was visible on Broadway, and there was an extra heavy police presence along the inside perimeter of the crime scene.
Shayla Renz said she was coming into Civic Center Park when she heard gunshots and got on the ground. She saw someone bleeding and saw people panic and run.
Denver police initially tweeted that one person was transported from the shooting scene for medical treatment, though Saunder told Post reporters that homicide detectives had been called.
Around 10:30 p.m., Denver police tweeted again, saying two people possibly related to the shooting at Broadway and Colfax walked in at an area hospital. One had suffered a gunshot wound, the other one or more stab wounds.
Thursday night’s shooting was not the first near the site of the city’s ongoing George Floyd protests.
One week earlier, on the first night of mass demonstrations downtown, Denver police said someone fired six or seven shots toward the Capitol. The gunfire sent protesters running, but there were no reported injuries. Police have made no arrests in that case.
