TAMPA — Moffitt Cancer Center has broken ground on a $400 million surgical hospital that will expand its patient capacity by 65 percent and allow for about a third more procedures over the next decade, center officials announced this week.

The facility will be 10 stories high and nearly 500,000 square feet, located on a 20-acre plot across from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Outpatient Center off McKinley Drive in north Tampa. Construction begins next month and will take about three years, the center said.

The news comes somewhat unexpectedly. Moffitt leaders said earlier this year that construction was dependent on funding from the Legislature, which never materialized.

No information about how the facility will be funded was included in a news release about the hospital. Spokesman Steve Blanchard said he could not immediately explain the change.

“This new hospital will be a place for firsts,” Moffitt president and chief operating officer Jack Kolosky said in the release. “New discoveries will be made here. New procedures will be performed. Through this state-of-the-art facility, we will revolutionize the way patient care is delivered.”

The facility will house dozens of new operating rooms and additional machinery for MRIs and computerized tomography scans. The new building will start with 128 inpatient beds, with the capacity to expand to 400 beds, the center said.

Construction plans include a 26,000-square-foot utility plant, a three-story parking garage and a bridge over McKinley Drive leading to the outpatient center. About 5,500 people will work on the project, with about 550 on site each day.

Tampa companies Barr and Barr, Inc., Hammes Company and Horus Construction Services, Inc. will complete the project, which will generate nearly $300 million in construction value, according to the release.
