The Discovery Center has announced they will be returning to serving the public with a Members-Only Welcome Day June 26.
The Center will then open to the public on June 27.
The Center had been closed to the public for 14 weeks to provide emergency childcare to first responders and healthcare workers as they dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. The Center provided over 90,000 hours of free childcare, 37,000 free meals and snacks, with over 1,000 free child enrollments.
“Over the last 14 weeks, we have become a leader in how to integrate play, leaning, and safety. We now have almost 100,000 hours in COVID care and have shown by word and by action that we care about our community,” Rob Blevins, Discovery Center Executive Director, said in a statement. “The good news is that we care as much about having fun, engaging, and inspiring exhibits and activities for you and your family to enjoy together as we do about safety. Temperature checks, masks, handwashing, sanitizing, distancing—you name it. We’ve been doing it, and we’re going to keep doing it.”
While the Center is reopening to the public, they will continue to provide child care to the families still in need of care through the end of the summer.
“We’ve been running on caffeine and kindness for many, many weeks now,” Blevins said. “We’re looking forward to having our community come back in and support their community funded, nonprofit science center as a science center again. We need it. We poured virtually every dollar we had into providing this free emergency childcare.”
The Center will be following in the footsteps of other area attractions in requiring reserve tickets to enter the facility. Occupancy limits for the center will be set by the city and county government.
