Nadia Torkman of the Chico State women’s track and field team has earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association Impact Award which was announced Tuesday.
The Impact Award is given to one CCAA student-athlete who has exemplified leadership through participation in community service while being a standout in athletics and academics. The award is presented each academic year.
Selections are made by the conference’s 13 Student Athlete Advisory Committees.
“Just as this award states, Nadia has made a significant impact on our program,” Chico State Director of Athletics Anita Barker said in a press release following the announcement. “We are so proud of her.”
Torkman is originally from Nevada City and is an international relations and political science major.
She also served as the Chico State athletic department’s first compliance intern while logging hours in fundraisers, promotions, community programs and special events.
A major accomplishment for Torkman during the academic year was creating the “Scratch the Stigma” mental health campaign within the Chico State athletic department to address the stigma surrounding mental health, and to promote dialogue on the topic of mental wellness.
The sudden end to the track and field season only allowed Torkman to compete in one meet. She finished third in the high jump (matching her personal best height of 5-4 1/4) and a fifth place showing in the javelin throw (118-10).
During her time at Chico State, Torkman served for two years as the women’s track and field representative on the SAAC board. She assisted in producing the organization’s 2019 “It’s On Us” multimedia campaign to address sexual assault and violence.
In addition to being involved in the Chico Area Recreation and Park District After School program, Torkman held volunteer internships at the Community Legal Information Center and the One Mobile Projector Per Trainer non-profit program.
Torkman is the third Wildcat in the last four years to win the conference’s Impact Award. She joins 2017 recipient Haley Kroll (women’s cross country/track and field) and last year’s winner, Claire Wayne (softball).
Stofiel earns All-America academic honor
Tyler Stofiel, the catcher for the Chico State baseball team, racked up another academic honor by earning a third team Academic All-America honor from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Stofiel, a now-graduated senior, earned an All-District academic honor in May. He is the first Wildcat baseball player to be named Academic All-America since Luke Barker earned third team honors in 2015.
On the field, Stofiel racked up a flurry of awards as he was named a two-time Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association Gold Glove nominee after committing five errors in 145 career games behind the plate. Stofiel earned two CCAA All-Honorable Mention awards while serving as a Wildcat team captain for three seasons.
Stofiel was also a leader among Chico State’s student-athlete community, representing the baseball team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four years.
Stofiel totaled a 3.94 GPA, the highest among any Division II catcher honored.
