Tuskegee University and Auburn University will, in collaboration, open the Alabama Center for Reparative Justice on June 18, 2020, in an effort to “tangibly and meaningfully address the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow,” in the state.

The Center, located on Tuskegee’s campus, will research slavery, Jim Crow and their “afterlives” in the state, according to the executive summary of the mission. The operating budget will be provided by Auburn and the physical location for the center will be provided by Tuskegee.

“Auburn is trying to make amends for their mistakes in the beginning,” said Guy Mount, assistant professor of history at Auburn University. In addition to making amends, the Center falls directly in line with the land-grant mission of Auburn by “improving the lives of the people of Alabama...through life-enhancing research and scholarship, and selfless service.”

The Center aims to be a global leader in reparative justice, according to the summary, while working to educate the general public on “peacebuilding strategies.”

The motto of the Center, “Researching, Sharing and Repairing,” covers multiple action areas for the center. It will be a place for new organizations to bloom, Mount said. They plan to work with non-profits and co-ops that share the same mission of justice as the Center, according to the summary.

The mission will also serve as a think tank for the state, producing work on issues like the racial wealth gap, educational resource inequality, mass incarceration, local hate crimes and other pressing conflicts that impact the African American community.

The Center is hosting a “virtual mixer” tonight (7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18). “This interactive ‘virtual mixer’ seeks your input on how to best address the lasting legacies of slavery and Jim Crow that have contributed to the disproportionate harm that the virus has caused to Black communities in Lee and Macon counties.”
