Take The Wheel: 4 High-Impact Ways To Accelerate Your Career - Forbes

Over the years, I’ve coached hundreds of leaders. By far, the most successful leaders I’ve worked with are those who take the wheel and drive their careers forward. The rest are sitting in the passenger seat, letting someone else control their career journey.

It seems like I’m not alone in this discovery. Executive coach and author Ed Evarts has a new book out titled, Drive Your Career-9 High-Impact Ways to Take Responsibility for Your Own Success. His book is the driving manual for those of you who are ready to take control of your career.

Here are four tips to help you successfully navigate your career.

Set your career GPS with the proper destination. All too often, people drive in circles trying to find the exit to success. As Evarts points out, many never arrive at this destination because they don’t have a vision for their career. Drivers have a vision for their career; they take responsibility for their success; and they make purposeful decisions to get from point A to point B.

Fine-tune your relationship with your boss. The key to moving ahead in your career is to have a great relationship with your boss. In my book, Suddenly in Charge: Managing Up, Managing Down, Succeeding All Around, I remind readers that if they don’t manage up, they won’t have to worry about managing down. Managing your relationship with your boss is critical, yet many people leave this part of their job up to fate—big mistake.

Think of your boss as the engine of your vehicle. When your relationship with your boss is fine-tuned and running on all cylinders, you’ll have a smooth and comfortable ride. As Evarts points out in his book, “When you have a positive relationship with your boss, many wonderful and career-enhancing things—opportunities, praise, promotions, pay increases—are possible. Your life as an employee is easier, you have more impact, and you’re in a stronger position to drive your career forward.”

Of course, the opposite is true, as well. If you have a poor relationship or no relationship with your boss, you’re more than likely to have a bumpy ride ahead of you.

The need for accountability. Lots of us go for Sunday drives every day of the week because there is no one next to us, making sure we stay on track. The scenery is great, and the drive is pleasant, yet the fact remains that we are no closer to our stated destination when we return than when we started.

According to Evarts, “The number-one way to make progress on any goal is to have an accountability partner. This person isn’t just anyone. This special person cares about you making progress as much as you do. It can be a colleague, a friend, a family member, or someone you just met who shares your objectives. Regardless of who it is, you need to be very specific with your accountability partner about what you’re trying to achieve.”

If you’ve got the resources to do so, hiring a coach may be the way to go, as these people have experience helping their clients remain on track. Also, since you’re paying a coach, you’re less likely to put your career on cruise control and are more apt to act.

Slowing down to speed up. The idea of slowing down to speed up is counterintuitive to many. However, in my experience and Evarts, taking a brief pause can be quite beneficial. Evarts points out that by slowing down, you can develop deeper working relationships with others and strong workplace relationships are critical for career success.

The next time you’re tempted to charge through a conversation, take a moment and pause. Ask how the other person is doing before steering the conversation to business.

In this fast-paced world, this will take some practice. An excellent way to remember to pause is to put a yellow sticker on the edge of your laptop. Consider this your yellow traffic light. When speaking to a work colleague or your boss, wait a minute or two until the other person gives you the green light to proceed.

There are many different paths to career success. However, the journey is best done from the driver’s seat, where you set the destination and control the speed at which you drive.

Here’s to an exhilarating ride and an amazing journey!
