Grapevine Family and Community Resource Center Executive Director Melissa Gallagher is calling a $42,000 grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation a “renewed investment” in the Grapevine’s staff.

“Staff is kind of front and center at the moment,” Gallagher said. “It always is, but this is an opportunity for us to really be putting a lot of investment into our staff – they’re incredible, and it’s really important to me as the director here that we’re really keeping morale high.”

The goal, according to Gallagher, is to elevate every staff member at the Grapevine in some way, through professional development, training and compensation.

The grant itself is imp according to Gallagher, both in terms of funding and what it can be used for.

“We knew we were being considered for this and we were expecting something, but we just didn’t know what exactly it was going to look like,” Gallagher said. “So we were really thrilled when we found out – for us, a small nonprofit, it’s a large grant.”

The grant is intended to last two years, meaning $21,000 for each year, but all of it was offered to the nonprofit upfront, according to Gallagher.

“The really nice thing about the charitable foundation – I believe that they believe that we are the experts and we know our community,” Gallagher said. “And they trust us to invest as needed.”

The grant is meant to provide for operations, something that Gallagher said isn’t common.

“Most grants that we receive are intended mostly or exclusively to support programs,” she said. “Which is wonderful – and to have discretionary funding that can be used in other ways is really important. Obviously you can’t run programs unless you have the staff and the facilities and the equipment to run those programs.”

Most importantly, Gallagher said, the grant will help further the Grapevine’s mission: “promoting family and community health and wellbeing through support, education and the sharing of resources.”

Gallagher said that with the holidays coming up, the nonprofit’s mission is more important than ever. Grapevine will be available to help families in need of holiday assistance, in the form of gifts for children, food or other holiday and cold weather needs.
