Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn, Lloyd Center’s oldest tenant, says it isn’t going anywhere yet - OregonLive

Lloyd Center-loving Portlanders have already had an emotional month and it hasn’t even been a week yet.

Earlier this week, many learned that a real estate lending company plans to foreclose on the Lloyd Center mall and redevelop the space.

But there’s at least one thing to hold on to, for now. Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn, one of the Lloyd Center’s original stores and the only one that’s still there, doesn’t have any plans to leave, according to Instagram anyway.

“We’re still OPEN and we’re aren’t going anywhere!” the popcorn shop announced Tuesday. “Even with the inevitable changes to the Lloyd Center we plan to be in the same spot!”

Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn isn’t just the only store from the original 1960s lineup that remains at the Lloyd Center, it’s one of the few stores at all.

During a visit in January, at least 37 storefronts were closed and a kiosk owner told The Oregonian/OregonLive, “I have been at Lloyd Center for almost 10 years, but I feel like this mall is going down.”

But Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn has persisted, through different decades and owners. David Ferguson, the current owner, purchased the business in 2019.

It’s still not clear what will happen to the mall. KKR Real Estate Finance Trust, a New York-based real estate lending company, has said it will redevelop the shopping center.

According to KKR, payments on a $110 million loan have been overdue since October 2020.

“Upon taking title, which is targeted for the fourth quarter, we’ll begin to plan for a comprehensive redevelopment of the site, which we expect will include multiple uses including residential and creative offices,” said Patrick Mattson, the president and chief operating officer of the company.

So the future of the popcorn-shop-that-could at the mall is uncertain. Joe Brown’s Carmel Corn did not respond for comment, but the company did recently post on social media that they are hiring.

“We’re expanding and we’d love for you to join us!” said the post. “Now training for our MLK, Vancouver Mall & Lloyd Center locations!”

Those locations do not appear to be open yet, however.

Either way, there’s more good news for those who are feeling nostalgic but not nostalgic enough to actually go to the mall: Joe Brown’s also sells popcorn online.
