Senior center teams with CVS for vaccine clinics

The Humboldt Senior Resource Center and CVS Pharmacy are partnering to
provide flu shots Oct. 5-6 at HSRC Senior Dining Centers in Eureka and Arcata. COVID shots will also be available.

CVS pharmacists will administer flu and COVID vaccines on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the HSRC Eureka campus, 1910 California St., in the garden area and parking lot at the south side of the building, weather permitting.

The Arcata clinic will be on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. at the Senior Dining Center at the Arcata Community Center, 321 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway in the parking lot nearest the community center playground, weather permitting.

Reservations are not required. Flu vaccines will be available to anyone age 3 and older in the order of arrival, administered to walk-up clients and those wishing to remain in their vehicles. Face coverings and physical distancing, as well as identification and insurance card, are required. Most insurance plans cover flu vaccines at no cost to the recipient.

COVID shots will also be available at both clinics. COVID vaccines and flu shots can be administered at the same time.

HSU named a top school by Forbes

Humboldt State University was named one of the 2021 Top Colleges by Forbes magazine.

Taking the global pandemic and widespread calls for social justice into context, the media company re-evaluated its methodologies to measure America’s best colleges and universities. For the first time, the 2021 list takes into account low-income student outcomes and graduate earnings.

In an article published by Forbes, Christian Kreznar writes, “Public universities can deliver the most outstanding education to the broadest range of students at the most affordable price.”

Forbes included 600 undergraduate private and public institutions on this year’s list, which represents only 15% of the nearly 4,000 degree-granting postsecondary universities in the U.S.

Humboldt State University was ranked 476 out of the 600 schools that made the list.

County opens new sheriff’s office in Garberville

Humboldt County will host a grand opening on Oct. 13 for the $3.1 million Garberville campus complex. The former library and office building were demolished to make way for the new modular complex. The facility will serve as a community center for Southern Humboldt residents with a library, sheriff’s substation and conference room.

The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. at 715 Cedar Street in Garberville. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

“The wait is almost over for the opening of the Garberville Campus Complex that will benefit all Southern Humboldt residents,” said 2nd District Supervisor Michelle Bushnell in a prepared statement. “The county has worked hard on this much-needed project that will provide services all in one place for the public to enjoy and stay connected to their community.”

The library will be open Wednesday from noon-7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from noon-6 p.m., and Saturday noon-4 p.m.
