In what was a pretty big surprise, five-star 2022 center Jalen Washington announced today that he will be committing to the University of North Carolina. This announcement comes roughly a week after his official visit to campus, and he is the third player to commit to the Tar Heels in the 2022 class.
Washington is a 6’9, 210-lb player from West Side High School in Gary, IN. He is the sixth-best player at the center position, and he is the 25th-best player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite. Other schools that were in the running for Washington include Alabama, Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, and Stanford. Some experts had predicted that Indiana was in the lead for him, but his official visit seems to have went well enough that he decided to take his talents to Chapel Hill instead.
Despite playing at the center position in high school, there is a fairly decent to good chance that Washington will be a power forward at the college level. According to some of the scouting reports, he is an athletic player with a huge wingspan, which has made him a really good rebounder to this point in his career. When it comes to his offense, he can get it done at all three levels, and has even been known to create his own shots off the dribble.
Hubert Davis has wasted little to no time on the recruiting trail in his first months as Carolina’s head coach. Brady Manek, Justin McKoy, Will Shaver, Seth Trimble, Dawson Garcia, and now Jalen Washington have all committed while he has had the keys, which is outstanding for someone who is a first-time head coach. His connections to high school prospects as an assistant coach has paid off in dividends, but his personality is also one that players have been drawn to for as long as he has been in Chapel Hill. We obviously hope that this will also translate onto the basketball court once the season starts this fall, but so far Davis has shown that he was indeed the right man for the job.
