After serving the past year-and-a-half as a food distribution site, COVID-19 testing and mass vaccination facility and most recently a cooling center, the Town Toyota Center is getting back into the entertainment business.
General Manager Mark Miller said he is scrambling to hire enough part-time staff but in the meantime they’re on their way to building a schedule of events and entertainment.
The first scheduled event since operations were shut down March 2020, is the Wenatchee Wine and Food Festival on Aug. 28.
That will be followed Sept. 17 when the Mexican band Groupo Firme will perform.
Then on Sept. 21, rock band Styx will make a return to Wenatchee.
“Staffing is going to be the biggest issue and that’s what, of course, every business is facing and the entertainment business is not immune to it,” Miller said.
The center needs to fill cleaning, set-up and sales positions.
In an effort to attract more job applicants, TTC has raised pay for its part-time workers to $15 an hour, previously having paid minimum wage, Miller said.
The TTC is working on scheduling other events and has already booked Cirque Holidaze for the holidays.
The continued closure of the Canadian border makes Wenatchee Wild hockey games difficult to predict but Miller said he hopes the team will be able to return to a full schedule.
The Town Toyota Center served as a 24-hour cooling center during the hottest days of the current heat wave.
MIller said about 43 people per day slept at the Town Toyota Center while it was open as a cooling center.
