ELKINS — The Phil Gainer Community Center is seeking help to complete the installation of a new gymnasium floor at the facility.
The Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission opened bids for the new gym floor at its last meeting and the cost for the project was estimated to be approximately $70,000. That price will include the installation of a new traditional “pad and pour” floor at the center.
“We had a total of four businesses bid on the project,” Phil Gainer Center Manager Chris Lee told The Inter-Mountain Wednesday. “The low bid numbers came in about where we expected and we’re excited to move forward with this project.
“These ‘pad and pour’ floors are exceptional gym floor surfaces for basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, tennis and pickleball. They are also multipurpose floors that are durable enough to handle the myriad of events that we host at the Center.”
The new floor will be another major upgrade for the facility, which has recently seen significant improvements such as kitchen renovations, air conditioning, new windows, and roof repair. Lee said the new floor is the final missing piece to the center’s upgrades.
“The current gym floor is simply a concrete pad that has had lines painted on it that was then varnished and waxed,” Lee said. “The current floor is far from ideal when it comes to recreational use. In fact, it’s simply not safe for certain functions.
“This new gym floor will still be durable, while better protecting users — especially our local youth. With a more traditional gym floor, we’ll be well-equipped to not only host practices, but potentially exhibitions and tournaments.”
The Phil Gainer Center was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Snowshoe Foundation this spring, and additional money has already been raised for the new project, Lee said.
“To supplement the project costs this time around, I’m attempting to raise funds within the community,” Lee said. “The community fundraising goal is $20,000 and we’ve already started to get some donations. This would leave approximately $30,000 that will be financed by the city.”
If everything goes according to plan, the new gym floor will be installed by October, Lee said. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at the Phil Gainer Community Center at 142 Robert E. Lee Avenue, Elkins, WV, 26241.
“I would like to thank the Snowshoe Foundation, not only for their support of this project but for their continued support of the Center since we were founded nearly five years ago,” Lee said. “The foundation has a long track record of supporting so many worthy projects in the region and we are lucky to have them serving our community. We are very fortunate to live among folks that support one another, especially as it applies to our local youth.
“I’m graciously asking for folks in the community to support this project and any donated amount would be greatly appreciated,” he added. “Everything raised will be strictly earmarked for this project. Your donation will have a long-lasting impact on youth recreation in the region.”
