BLUE HILL, Neb. (KSNB) - There were many splashes, emotions and festivities Friday in Blue Hill with the grand opening of their new ablF center.

The Blue Hill Aquatic Center was a long awaited project by many. Blue Hill Mayor Keri Schunk said the $2.6 million project had been on the city council’s agenda a number of times before the plan was put into action.

Dozens from all across Blue Hill as well as people from outside of the town came together to celebrate the grand opening of the aquatic center. The center had been around for quite some time, but this is the new and improved location of the pool.

Diane Karr, member of the Blue Hill pool committee said there were a number of reasons for relocating the summer attraction.

“There were quite a few challenges with the previous location,” Karr said. “One was, of course having to cross the busy highway and we wanted to, you know, make it safer for the kids to walk and bike here. This location is fully accessible as far as handicap requirements.”

Karr added that having the pool in the center of the town and the condition that the previous pool was in, make this new location much better than before.

The Blue Hill Aquatic Center has been open since June 1, but Friday was a day to celebrate the new and improved staple in the community.

At the grand opening there was a ribbon cutting, free admission, free food, giveaways and even a challenge to retrieve the greased watermelon tossed into the deep end of the pool.

The opening of the aquatic center hit home for many, as the project had gone through some challenges along the way.

“It seemed impossible that Blue Hill would ever be able to fund a $2 plus million swimming pool, I also mentioned that some people never thought it would happen,” Schunk said. “However, as you can see today, Blue Hill did make it happen.”

The fun and games started Friday afternoon with a few speeches, and ended with a glow-stick lit midnight swim Friday evening. More activities were planned at the Blue Hill Aquatic Center throughout the holiday weekend.
