The dead period for college basketball recruiting ended on June 1st, and it only took until June 2nd for Hubert Davis to land his first recruit. Three-star 2022 center Will Shaver announced his commitment to the Tar Heels during the second day of his official visit. It was previously reported that Shaver was not going to announce which school he would be attending until his birthday on September 17th, so Davis earning his commitment is quite a big deal if we are to believe that Shaver was seriously committed to that timeline.
Will Shaver is a 6’10, 245-lb center that currently plays for Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, AL. He is currently the 146th-best player in the 2022 class, but he is the 16th-best center. During his junior season Shaver averaged 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds, and helped lead his team to their first ever state championship. This spring he played on the Under Armour Circuit for his Pro One AAU team. His coach on the circuit, Dylan Bunnell, had this to say about his game (via 247Sports):
Added Shaver’s AAU coach, Dylan Bunnell: ”He always has this incredible stigma against him that because he’s a big man he has no skill,” Bunnell said. “We’ve had multiple games this spring where he’s made five-plus threes. He’s really talented from the perimeter, but some guys forget that they’re 6-11 and don’t want to bang around and do things in the paint. He keeps that in the forefront, knowing that that’s where he can really impact the game.”
Hubert Davis has been pretty adamant about wanting versatility in his lineups, and that is exactly what he will be getting with Shaver. Once Brady Manek’s eligibility runs out, Shaver will be able to step into his stretch big role. Also fun fact: Manek committed to Oklahoma as the 27th-best power forward in the country, and the 117th-best player overall. It goes without saying that this means nothing when it comes to what we should expect from Shaver, but it’s worth noting for those that raised an eyebrow when seeing Shaver’s ranking.
Speaking of rankings, considering all of the glowing reviews of Shaver from scouts and those familiar with his game, one has to wonder how much his ranking will increase now that high school basketball is more or less back to normal. It goes without saying that the last 12 months have been challenging when it comes to recruiting, and to some degree just being able to play basketball in general. However, with AAU basketball’s return and college coaches being able to recruit in person again, I’d expect to start seeing more movement in the recruiting rankings, and that could very well benefit Shaver.
Hubert Davis landing a recruit after only the second day of their campus visit is extremely impressive, and it makes me wonder how much success he will have with the rest of his recruiting board. It goes without saying that he won’t hit the mark every single time, but it’s also hard to ignore the fact that Shaver not only committed, but abandoned his plan to commit in September. Next up are visits from Jalen Washington, Justin Taylor, Dereck Lively, De’Ante Green, Jaden Bradley, Seth Trimble, and Isaac Traudt. We will keep everyone posted on any announcements and recruiting news that may follow.
