BEVERLY — The Beverly Heritage Center recently opened two new exhibits with more planned later this month, and several opportunities to see them for yourself.

New in the gallery of the museum is “Old Cavin’ Haven: Historical Cave Explorations in Randolph County.” This free display uses art, pictures, and 20th century artifacts to tell about caving, how caves are formed, and about local caves like the Sinks of Gandy and Bowden Cave. The exhibit also features hands-on activities including a scavenger hunt for kids and a poll for favorite cave name.

Have you ever wondered about the relationship between the Beverly Heritage Center, Historic Beverly Preservation, and Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation? Another brand new display in the museum gallery tells the story of how these organizations came to be.

On June 19 at 1 p.m. there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new window display in the Hill building on Court Street which explores the Prohibition and Women’s Suffrage movements in Randolph County and highlights Anna Laurie Day McClintic, a teacher, postmaster, prohibitionist, and suffragette from Pickens.

The ceremony will be followed by a walking tour of downtown Beverly, showcasing influential local women including Edna Kildow, a journalist for the Randolph Enterprise at 9 years old and one of the youngest-ever members of the Press Association, and Minerva Semour, who lived through slavery and was able to provide for her family as a free woman.

Another upcoming project will be recreation stained glass windows on the Beverly Bank building on the corner of Main and Court streets. The Heritage Center will install window clings that are based off of the original stained glass windows that would have been in the Beverly Bank when it was built in 1900.

Members of the public will be able to support these projects and other future improvements by attending the Heritage Center’s annual fundraiser dinner on June 12. This Summer Picnic Soiree will have a social hour at 6 p.m. with music from Duo Acoustica and dinner at 7 p.m. with grilled beef tenderloin and elegant picnic-inspired sides.

For event tickets or other information visit beverlyheritagecenter.org or call 304-637-7424. The Beverly Heritage Center is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, or by appointment.
