CADIZ — The Harrison Hills City School District Board of Education approved hiring an architectural firm to design plans for an upcoming improvement project and construction of a new learning center.

Superintendent Dana Snider said the board held a special meeting Tuesday, which only lasted around 15 minutes, to hire the firm as well as two new school employees.

The board approved the hiring of The Thrasher Group of Canton, Ohio to perform the design work and plans for the projects, which include upgrades to a portion of Mazeroski field and construction of a new outdoor learning center. Snider said a price to hire the firm has not been set. The company will be paid a percentage of the project cost, once it has been determined, she said. So far, there is not an estimated cost for either project.

“They’re (The Thrasher Group) not 100 percent sure how much design work they’ll have to do. We’re still in the visioning stages of what we would like to have completely done,” she said. “The price will be determined by how much work they have to do.”

The school plans to purchase a 5-acre portion of Mazeroski Field from the village of Cadiz once an appraisal of the field is obtained by the board. The school board currently leases the field from the village and is in the process of negotiating a price to purchase it. Snider said they plan to perform upgrades to the property for a boys’ baseball field. The school already utilizes the field for its sports teams but hopes to own it prior to spending funds to improve the area.

Snider said once the appraisal and design work are complete, the board will then submit a purchase price offer to Village Council.

The outdoor learning facility will be constructed next to the east side of the school facility. Snider said the new center will be a covered educational environment where students can take their learning outdoors. She said it would offer an alternative learning environment for students.

“It would be for anyone who would want to come outside, maybe for the day, and teach out there or do experiments, work with plants. It would allow kids the chance to go outside,” she said.

During the meeting, the board also approved the hiring of two new employees — Taylor Chaney, who was hired as an occupational therapist, and Morgan Edwards as a junior high math teacher.

The board will hold its next regular meeting at 6 p.m. June 24 in the administrative office at 100 Huskies Way, Cadiz.
