HAMLET — The Hamlet Senior Center host a presentation on the history of Juneteenth on Friday at the center’s celebration ahead of June 19, which President Joe Biden is expected to make a federally recognized holiday Thursday.
Juneteenth is the celebration and recognition of the day that the last enslaved person in the US was told of their freedom. After the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in January of 1863, not all enslaved people were informed of their freedom. It took until June 19, 1865 for the news to reach Galveston, Texas, the last of the Confederate states to be officially informed of the outlawing of slavery, though it was not outlawed nationwide until the 13th Amendment was passed in on Dec. 18, 1865.
Hazel Robinson will present the history of Juneteenth at 11 a.m., Friday, June 18 at the Hamlet Senior Center located at 102 Lakeside Dr. in Hamlet. Those who are 55 and older are invited to attend. The Center is encouraging African American guests to wear their traditional African attire to honor their heritage and to encourage others to learn the history of slavery in America.
The Center will serve red-colored foods and beverages to symbolize the blood of African Americans’ ancestors.
