Riverside House, a Miami non-profit guiding men and women convicted of crime to becoming productive citizens, officially announces the opening of the first Day Reporting Center in Miami-Dade County.
The Day Reporting Center, located at 968 NW Second St., Miami, FL 33128, is a place where ex-offenders can use such resources as computers to conduct job searches and submit employment applications. Additionally, this positive co-working space allows visitors access to Riverside team members who assist in consulting on such topics as family reunification, job skills training, spiritual development, and counseling. Programs in mental health, substance abuse counseling, soft skills, and bible studies also are available regularly.
As part of Riverside’s “Reentry 2.0” initiative to help guide ex-offenders in the Miami-Dade community, the Day Reporting Center offers alumni support to graduates of their residential facility and offers community support groups for the greater public.
“They come in, rather than hanging at the park or hanging on the street, they will come and get some help. They will get help with employment, mental health counseling, any kind of referral counseling that they may have a need for, they’ll be able to get that here,” said Cleveland Bell III, president and CEO of Riverside House.
“This center is more than just a safe space for our second-chance population. It’s a supportive space for those to get all the services they need to have a successful reentry after serving time in prison,” Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins said during the facility’s ribbon cutting ceremony.
Some 1,500–2,000 people are released from prison to Miami-Dade County each year.
Riverside House believes that all of the formerly incarcerated should have guidance available to them, regardless of whether or not the individuals have gone through their residential program. Riverside’s goal is to guide ex-offenders moving towards the path of a new productive life.
Attendees credited with making the opening of the first Day Reporting Center in Miami-Dade County a success include District 5 Commissioner Higgins, Rev. Aaron Lauer from Coral Gables Congregational UCC, Riverside House Board of Directors, the Young Professional Board, and Riverside’s community partners at The Miami Foundation.
