Summer on the Streets, Firehouse Art Center’s ArtWalk, kicks off with a patriotic celebration July 3, and will have live art markets and art activities for all ages as well as musicians and performers. In September it will host a separate art festival celebrating Longmont’s 150th anniversary.
“What was evident during the long COVID-19 pandemic months was a lot of residents turned to art as a solace in coping, sharing their stories and learning new skills,” Firehouse Art Center Executive Director and event organizer Elaine Waterman said.
Waterman said event organizers decided to forgo the May Art Festival due to ongoing coronavirus concerns, and to stretch the May ArtWalk over eight weeks instead. “Typically we have these large art festivals in May and September where we shut down Main Street and have an ArtWalk Festival, but this year we turned the May event into eight smaller weekend art festivals.”
The free Summer on the Streets ArtWalk will run Saturdays from July 3 through Aug. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. On Sept. 11, event organizers are bringing back the fall ArtWalk Festival, which includes activities, art and musicians commemorating Longmont’s 150th anniversary.
This summer, art enthusiasts can visit vendors, listen to music and make their own art in the breezeways along main street in three areas. Those areas include:
- 500 East Main Street breezeway, on the east side, between Ivy Rose and The Roost;
- 400 West Main Street breezeway, on the west side, between The Cactus Coven and People Ready;
- 300 East Main Street breezeway, on the east side, between Used Book Emporium and Jensen Guitar.
“We haven’t finished all the plans for our September festival yet, but we are really excited with what we have so far because it’s Longmont’s birthday,” Waterman said. “We are still welcoming vendors, artists and performers for the September Art Festival.”
Waterman said the Fourth of July Concert in the Park at Thompson Park featuring the Longmont Symphony Orchestra was canceled by the city, but residents can still enjoy a smaller patriotic performance at the first ArtWalk on July 3. The ensemble will now perform at St. Stephen’s Plaza, 500 Main St., starting at 4 p.m.
“It was really important to event organizers that we did our part to ensure that all of Longmont’s special holidays staples continued this year with it being our 150th anniversary,” Waterman said.
“Because we are still in a pandemic, we ask art-goers to continue to practice social distancing when possible and for unvaccinated residents to wear a mask,” Waterman explained.
“The silver lining — as we all emerge from our blighted pandemic states, is that a lot of incredible art was produced, refined and created from many Longmont residents, and the eight-week summer ArtWalk allows us to showcase and share those experiences,” Waterman said.
Mostly, Waterman said she just wants “residents to come and enjoy the fresh air, the food, art, activities, music and network with artists — perhaps they might inspire you to also create your own art.”
“I’m really excited because we are bringing back the Chalkmont chalk art Contest at the Aug. 21 ArtWalk,” Waterman said. “We already have a lot of talented artists signed up, including an 11-year-old.”
The Firehouse Art Center, 677 Fourth Ave., will have event maps and schedules available for festival-goers to pick up as well as a free kids art activity kit. Its gallery will be open from noon to 8 p.m. every Saturday during Summer on the Streets for residents to step inside and check out student artwork.
Residents wanting to be vendors in the ArtWalks or in the September Art Festival may do so by visiting FireHouse Art Center’s website at firehouseart.org/artwalk-longmont. Residents may also visit the same website for a full listing of ArtWalk, festival vendors, artists and performers.
