The Chicago Cultural Center was set to reopen Wednesday after being closed since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, city officials said.
The Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St., built in the late 19th century as the city’s main public library, was to reopen at 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to a release from the mayor’s office.
New to the Cultural Center starting Wednesday is a Chicago-centric shop, BUDDY, a store selling Chicago-made art and other Chicago-made products that’s the brainchild of the Public Media Institute, according to the release.
Two art exhibits were scheduled to debut Wednesday at the Cultural Center, “Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford: League of Nations” and “what flies but never lands?,” according to the release.
The city had previously announced the reopening date and announced that a renovation project was returning the Cultural Center’s Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Rotunda to their original 1890s glory.
The restoration of the neoclassical building’s northern glass dome is underway. Work was expected to continue until early 2022. The dome is on the north side of the building and is one of two glass domes at the Cultural Center. The other Tiffany Glass dome, on the south side in Preston Bradley Hall, was restored in 2008.
