This year’s Walk for Life not only will feature the traditional walk aimed at raising funds for the Cañon City Pregnancy Center, but it also will be part of a grand opening and ribbon cutting for their new facility.

The community generously has supported the nonprofit organization for more than 36 years, and they’ve come through again.

The center started a capital campaign in January and moved into the new building at 614 and 616 Yale Place in May.

“Due to COVID, our client numbers had increased by 40% in 2020,” said Stori Thompson, the Director of Center Relations. “That was a catalyst to expanding our services, which in turn meant the need for a larger facility.”

The center raised about $100,000 in pledges in six weeks in order to satisfy the bank to get a mortgage.

“The community rallied around us,” Thompson said. “This is a monumental achievement for our small town.”

The center moved out of their less than 2,000 square-foot space on Greenwood Avenue to an 8,000 square-foot space that formerly was used as a doctor’s office.

The south side of the building is for a boutique that offers clothing, shoes and accessories for preemies through adults free of charge, including maternity items.

The north side of the building has a large waiting area, as well as offices, storage, private counseling space, and rooms committed to storing diapers, breast pumps, infant formula, baby food and infant furniture.

The center has been serving the families of Fremont County for more than 36  years and is committed to serving individuals and families with resources, mentoring and an extensive educational program.

“All of our services are absolutely free,” Thompson said. “There is no charge for anything and it’s not based on income. Nobody has to qualify for anything. They just have to either be pregnant or have a child under 18.”

The center currently serves more than 500 families in Fremont County, as well as the surrounding counties.

Looking toward the future, the center plans to offer groups for dads, abortion recovery groups, GED classes and navigators to help clients navigate the court system and social services benefits. They’d also like to create more partnerships with other local nonprofits.

“We are creating hope and we are creating the next generation,” Thompson said. “What we do here is helping two and three generations at a time. We are changing the future of Fremont County.”

The community is invited to the Walk for Life, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12 at the new building.

Heats will leave every 15 minutes until noon. Participants are welcome to walk, run or ride the route. Parking will be available in the St. Thomas More Hospital overflow parking area.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. There will be food vendors, games and a ribbon-cutting. Tours of the new facility also will be available.  For more information, email stori@ccpcenter.com or call 719-275-7074.

New hours for the center are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, or to donate online, visit https://www.abundantliferesources.org/.
