The Solano Town Center Gallery is awash in colors. After all, that is the theme of its newest show.
“Color” is an exhibit where artists from a wide array of media interpret the concept of color in their works, whether using a single color palette to make certain tones stand out or use contrasting colors to create a different tone.
Gallery Director Dennis Ariza said he put together a list of themes a year ago for member artists to interpret and is currently working his way down the list. This month’s theme is “Color,” which opened Wednesday and runs through June 26.
Ariza said the theme gives artists “a chance to display what colors they like” in diverse ways. The forms include paintings, photography, sculptures, jewelry, mixed media, drawings and more.
One photographer, Ariza said, took a picture of a farmers market display featuring peppers of colors ranging from red to green to yellow to orange. Another member used different colored pencils, while others have depicted colorful Mardi Gras masks, Venetian slippers, colors found in nature and a sculpture of a man’s face using green ceramics.
“There’s a lot of different types,” Ariza said.
The show’s featured artist is Cherol Ockrassa, an American Canyon artist whose interest in art dates back to when she was in kindergarten and was further accelerated when her grandparents took her to art classes at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Ockrassa works primarily in acrylic and cites Edward Hopper, Sally Storch and Andrew Wyeth among her influences.
Ariza said all of Ockrassa’s works — at least a dozen — would be featured in one of the rooms. Many of her paintings are done on a 3×4 canvas.
“She has some really nice work,” he said. “She’s been a member now for a couple years. Most of hers are all scenes. Sometimes she gets into these cartoon characters that she does.”
Additionally, the gallery’s scavenger hunt will return. Visitors are asked to find six images within the various artwork, write down the title and artist on a piece of paper, submit it and receive a free Solano Town Center Gallery ballpoint pen. One name will be drawn at a later date for a gallery gift certificate.
Ariza hopes the show will bring a sense of joy to anyone who visits the gallery and that visitors will be inspired to encourage others to see the show.
“I think there’s a lot of pieces in the show that are beautiful pieces (and) colorful,” he said. “I hope they put a smile on someone’s face.”
“Color” is on display through June 26 at the Solano Town Center Gallery, located at the Solano Town Center, 1350 Travis Blvd., Fairfield. The gallery is located on the upper level of the mall, next to the AT&T Store. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays.
