FAIRMONT– The Fairmont City Council held their work session on Monday night to discuss the future of the Local Option Sales Tax. The council heard presentations from the Community Center Committee and Fairmont Hockey Association as well as discussed the future of the utilization of the tax funds.

Brandon Edmundson, Co-Chair of the Community Center Committee presented the presentation. Edmundson said that the work from the committee is complete and is ready on their end and that it’s ready to move on to planning and designing. Edmundson finished his presentation by saying that it is time for his committee to know from the council what direction to move in when it comes to the community center.

“We’re very proud of the work that we’ve done,” Edmundson said. “But it’s time for us to stop until you guys (the council) tell us what to do, whether it’s to move forward or not. We (the committee) stress that it needs to be now, the longer we wait the more expensive this (the community center) gets.”

Fairmont Youth Hockey Association presented focused on three issues with the current hockey facility in Martin County Arena. The first issue was the facility and cooling system issues that included the facility was not built with year-round ice as an option. The current cooling system limits the season length and ability to add other sports.

The second issue is ice time limitations that cause problems such as late practice times for youth teams, that there are limited youth activities due to the hockey schedule and there cannot be any additional sports.

The third issue is the inability to host tournaments. The problems with Martin County Arena are there are challenges with the single sheet and tournaments take longer to play.

The strategic vision that was presented is to build a multi-use facility that provides a solution for more than one segment of the community. The cost of refurbishing Martin County Arena ranged from $3 million to $4 million.

The City Council then discussed the future of the tax funds and what they wanted to do moving forward with the community center. The council discussed the benefits of having ice put into a community center. Those benefits included bringing people to Fairmont from tournaments and that those people would utilize Fairmont’s hotels, restaurants and businesses. As of right now, Fairmont has hosted tournaments such as basketball and volleyball that space is limited.

The council agreed that there should be a request for proposal to see what the cost and design would look like for two sheets of ice and a fieldhouse that had multi-purpose courts. Since it was a work session there was not any motions made.
