The officers and responding paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the vehicle was injured in the crash and was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the other vehicle were unharmed.

Katie Wright, the mother of the driver who was shot, identified her son as Daunte Wright. She also said the passenger in the car was his girlfriend.

The mother told reporters she was on the phone with her son in the moments before he was shot.

"I heard scuffling, and I heard the police officers say, 'Daunte, don't run,' and then the other officer said, 'Put the phone down' and hung it up," Katie Wright said. "And a minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered — that was the passenger — and said that he'd been shot, and she put it on the driver's side and my son was laying there lifeless."

Brooklyn Center Police said they believe body-worn cameras and dash cameras were activated during the incident.

Members of the community have started congregating near the site to protest, holding Black Lives Matter signs, playing music and chanting at police.

A group of law enforcement officers in tactical gear were seen lining up across from protesters on the other side of the crime scene tape.

KSTP reporter Ben Henry described rising tensions at the scene as the police in riot gear approached the crowd.

Around 7:15 p.m., demonstrators started jumping on a squad car at the scene, and some were throwing concrete blocks. Police in riot gear then began advancing toward the crowd to maintain order. The mother of the victim got on a speaker and asked people to calm down.

After marshals formed a line at the front of the demonstration, police eventually backed away from the protesters, got in their vehicles and drove away, according to social media reports from the scene.

Around 8 p.m., protesters regrouped at 63rd Avenue and Lee Avenue. Activists were giving speeches and led the crowd in song and chants as they gathered around a makeshift memorial of chalk art and candles.

On Twitter, Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott called the shooting "tragic" while urging protesters to remain peaceful and asking police not to use force.

Around 9 p.m., the crowd of protesters began making their way toward the Brooklyn Center Police Department headquarters, according to social media reports. Aerial footage appeared to show police forming a perimeter around the building.

Just after 9:30 p.m., officers declared the demonstration outside the police station an unlawful assembly and gave them a 10-minute warning to clear out.
