Two tropical systems out in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico are not likely to have a big impact on Mississippi, but then again, they might.
The good news is, the state has a few days to prepare, just in case.
"We could actually have Laura AND Marco sharing the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, and both making U.S. landfalls on Monday," University of Miami meteorologist Brian McNoldy told USA TODAY Thursday.
Mississippi Emergency Management Director Greg Michel said Tropical Depression 13, which is in the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico, could be headed toward Mississippi next week, according to one model. Another model shows the system circling north and eastward back into the Atlantic Ocean, he said.
TD 13 became Tropical Storm Laura on Friday, moving west at 21 mph with sustained winds of 45 mph.
The storm system is expected to reach southern Florida early Tuesday, but from there it's still unclear where it will go.
Tropical Depression 13 formed overnight Wednesday with the National Hurricane Center forecasting a ramp-up to a hurricane with 75 mph winds by early next week, USA TODAY reported Thursday.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands and several other Caribbean islands. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.
The other system, Tropical Depression 14, is in the southern part of the Gulf and is making its way northward.
Hurricane season: What you need to know amid the coronavirus pandemic
A tropical storm warning was in effect for portions of the coasts of Honduras and Nicaragua. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within the next 12 hours, the Hurricane Center reported.
Michel said it is expected to impact Texas and possibly southwestern Louisiana Monday or Tuesday.
Regardless of where either storm ends up, Michel said now is a good time for Mississippians to check their hurricane supplies and make sure they are ready for a storm.
Tropical Storm Cristobal: 'A lot of people caught off guard,' Mississippian says
He said there are more challenges now to weather safety because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Make sure you have a plan or place to go if needed to evacuate," he said.
Michel warned residents staying at shelters will increase the risk of exposure to the coronavirus, "and we want to make sure we utilize those only in cases that are most important."
