Gonzalo is expected to reach the Windward Islands as either a strong tropical storm or possibly as a category 1 hurricane.
"Unfortunately, small storms like Gonzalo are often subject to large swings in intensity, up or down, and that aspect of the forecast remains highly uncertain," says the National Hurricane Center.
Rainfall is expected to total 2 to 5 inches for much of the affected areas, but some parts of the Windward Islands and Barbados should prepare for maximum rainfall of 8 inches. Rain accumulation may trigger flash flooding.
Gonzalo is also expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in Trinidad and Tobago as well as 1 to 2 inches over northeastern Venezuela.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados are under a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch, while St. Lucia is under a tropical storm warning. These areas should expect tropical storm conditions (winds between 39 and 73 mph) within the next 36 hours, with the possibility of hurricane conditions (winds over 64 mph) developing.
Tobago and Grenada and its dependencies are currently under a tropical storm watch, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible in the next 36 hours.
Current forecasts chart the path of Gonzalo as hugging the northern rim of South America, and the storm is expected to weaken and dissipate in the beginning of next week as it moves through the southern Caribbean.
Gonzalo has already set the record for the earliest-named seventh storm, in what is shaping up to be a busy hurricane season.
