Greene County’s major non-profit to help victims of violent and sexual crime is going to have a new, larger home.
The Victim Center will be moving in early 2021 to the Volt Credit Union building at 815 West Tampa Street, providing the agency with 50 percent more space than their current location at 819 North Boonville in Springfield.
“This facility is more than just a building,” Executive Director Brandi Bartel said in a statement.. “This facility represents healing and a more hopeful future to those who are in their darkest hour. I am humbled by the community’s support of this project and the opportunity we have to help more hurting people. During stressful and uncertain times, it is a good feeling to have something to celebrate as a community.”
The Victim Center has seen an increase clients of 87% in the last decade and served a record 4,657 victims of violent or sexual crime in 2019. The shortage of space at their current location is forcing a waiting list for services such as mental health counseling.
The estimated cost for the renovation and move is $1.33 million, with the Center already having raised about 86% of that goal. Local philanthropists Kurt and Sherry Hellweg will be matching the next $250,000 in donations for the new facility to help the Victim Center reach its funding goal.
More information about the services of the Victim Center can be found on their website.
