Saturday at the Palos Verdes Art Center from 2 to 4 p.m.
“Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?” is an exhibition of paintings by 34 local artists on view at the Palos Verdes Art Center. Each artwork originated with a title pulled from inside a fortune cookie that had been attached to a wheel of fortune (setting up the question: Chance or Destiny?). The titles, ranging from “Who’s Whistling at My Antiquities?” to “Waking Up in My Halloween Costume” and “I Fell in Love With a Woman from the Spanish Armada,” were imaginatively interpreted. Later, the pictures inspired lyrics and these in turn inspired songs.
On Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m., emcee Bernard Fallon will summarize how this “art challenge” evolved. Several artists will confess their initial reactions to the title they received and how they set about expanding it into their eventual artwork. After remarks from the lyricist about creating the little “narrative” that fleshes out each image, the composer (PV resident Brad Webster) will explain how he set about capturing the essence of the lyrics within the framework of each song. He’ll also perform a select number of songs live, so in effect this will be a mini-concert as well. The event is free, with wine and light refreshments. Masks and proof of vaccination required. The exhibition remains on view, with “Eugene Daub: Monumental” in the main gallery, through Nov. 13.
