The High Point University men's basketball team will host Mount Olive for opening night of The Qubein Center, a $170 million state-of-the-art facility and will be one of the finest collegiate basketball facilities in the country. The tipoff will be at 7:00 PM. Before the game, President Nido Qubein and his wife Mariana Qubein will dedicate the court to Coach Tubby Smith and his wife Donna Smith.
The Qubein Center is named after current High Point University President Nido Qubein and his wife, Mariana Qubein. President Qubein is an alumnus of High Point University and has been president at HPU since 2005. President Nido Qubein began his American college education at the University of Mount Olive and completed his undergraduate degree at High Point University. To represent President Qubein's important ties to both universities, the Trojans were selected as the first game to open the Qubein Center.
Coach Smith on the impact fans will have in the Qubein Center: "This is a real happening in this community. There are not many opportunities that you are going to have to be a part of what's going on here. This has really transformed our whole community. We expect the student body to be loud and ruckus in this arena along with the fans and our friends. We want to make the Qubein Center the toughest place to play in the Big South and the country."
Across the Bench
Mount Olive was 5-10 a season ago, Senior #4 Alan Treakle is the Trojans returning highest scorer from a season ago. Treakle scored 164 on the season in 15 games averaging 10.9 a game.
Mount Olive is led by Head Coach Joey Higginbotham who was hired in 2008. The 2021-22 season marks the 23rd season leading the Trojans.
The Trojans were 16-13 in 2019-20, a season before the shortened 2020-21 season.
Panther Notes
Mr. Wright Now
John-Michael Wright was named to the Big South Preseason First Team. Wright was highlighted by the NCAA in August as one of the top nine returning scorers in the nation. Wright averaged 20.7 points per game a season ago, which was good for the 17th best scorer in the nation. He assisted on nearly 25% of HPU's baskets when he was in the game a season ago according to Kenpom. Wright was the second-highest scorer in the Big South last season.

Non-Conference Play
High Point will play 14 non-conference games in total, nine of them taking place inside the beautiful Qubein Center in its inaugural season and the other five occurring on the road. Four of the Panthers' five opponents on the road are Power-Five teams.
A Lexington Legend
Coach Tubby Smith will have his "jersey" retired in Rupp Arena this season the University of Kentucky announced Tuesday night (October, 19th). Coach Smith will become just the fourth coach to have his name displayed on a banner in the rafters of Rupp Arena joining Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, and Rick Pitino. Kentucky will honor the national championship coach on December 31st when Coach Smith's High Point University Panthers take on the University of Kentucky.

Panthers in PR
In August, High Point went to San Juan for a foreign tour where HPU played three games against Puerto Rican semi-pro teams. The Panthers provided plenty of highlights while going 3-0 on the Island of Enchantment.
