LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Athletics unveiled major upgrades to Costello Athletic Center during a formal ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday to kick off homecoming weekend.
"We are thrilled to be able to unveil another state-of-the-art facility upgrade for our student-athletes here at UMass Lowell," said Director of Athletics Peter Casey. "Just as we ask our River Hawks to give the best of themselves day in and day out, we strive to provide them with the best resources to be able to do so. We are confident that the completion of this first phase of our Costello renovation will be a competitive asset now and in the future."
In front of a large crowd that included current student-athletes and coaches, alumni and the athletics advisory board, Casey along with Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, lead donor John Kennedy and women's soccer senior Halle Anderson gave remarks before officially cutting the ribbon. Guests were then invited inside to walk through the newly renovated athletic center.
"It's wonderful to be here supporting UMass Lowell Athletics and all the student-athletes, coaches, trainers and facility workers," commented women's soccer alum and athletics advisory board member Sarah Wroblewski '04. "When you invest in student-athletes, you are investing in our future leaders. This is a long overdue and much needed update to Costello. The improvements will not only boost the competitive nature of the student-athletes, but also the coaches' abilities to recruit top-level talent. I'm proud as an alum to witness the growth and success of UMass Lowell Athletics and River Hawk Nation."
Phase 1 of the Costello renovation began in 2020 after the athletics department had raised almost $5 million in its first ever capital campaign in an effort to further the student-athlete experience at UMass Lowell. The first phase of upgrades to the building were centered around River Hawk Central, a lounge that provides student-athletes the opportunity socialize and refuel. In addition, a 60-seat, movie theater style video review room and other new team meeting spaces were also created.
"The new renovations are a huge step in the right direction for our university and athletic community, and we wouldn't be where we are today without the outstanding network of alumni, who have built the foundation of UMass Lowell Athletics up until this point," explained Anderson. "Not only do these renovations provide new opportunities to share space and interact with the entire student-athlete community outside of our respective sports, but it also reaffirms the support that we have within our athletic department. Putting on our River Hawk uniforms before stepping onto the field, court or ice is an honor and the investment that our athletic community has made in facilities punctuates that which we already have to be grateful for."
A campaign to raise funds for Phase 2 of the construction at Costello is now underway, as well. Phase 2 will be highlighted by a state-of-the-art sports performance center. To donate to the continued upgrades, please click here.
