Letters to the Editor: Readers chime in on proposed recreation center - Canon City Daily Record

sirangsiram.blogspot.com

As a senior citizen who values a healthy lifestyle, my only option now for aerobic exercise is swimming.

The one small local private pool we have is entirely inadequate for the substantial number of seniors living in Cañon City who would like to engage in such activity.

A healthy citizenry is cost-effective for everyone. Healthy seniors are more likely to volunteer in schools, at the hospital, and engage in many other economically stimulating activities.

Healthy seniors do not require the time-consuming assistance of family members or costly in-home support.  Family members of healthy seniors are able to put their focus on their children and their careers.

Because of its many great activities, Cañon City is a great place for people to retire.  A high-quality community recreation center will make it even more so.

Many other Colorado towns of similar size have found a way to construct and operate recreation centers.  It’s time we do the same, and I believe the plan behind questions 6A and 6B is right for Cañon City.

Please join me in voting yes on both!

Laraine Wright,
Cañon City

Everyone living in Cañon City wants the best for our community.

But let’s look at the big picture around 6a/6b, instead of showing lovely pictures and possible amenities.

The concern about the proposed recreation center is the cost. It seems like every November, the Cañon City community is asked to pay more in taxes to support new initiatives. From the Denver Post 5/7/21, “property taxes are going up, up, up, and unless our local elected officials start proactively managing their local tax rates we are all going to start feeling the pain.”

Go to erecords.fremontco.com to explore the increasing taxes placed upon your property through the years. Our own tax bill has gone up 300% since 2003. The 6a and 6b proposals will increase your tax bill by $69.47 per $100,000 of assessed homeowner value, and this would be a heavy burden to our fixed-income seniors and families struggling to pay bills. The operational costs of the center would be 2 million each year, with generated revenues expected to be only 1.6 million.

We currently have many wellness services in our community, including recreation classes, fitness centers with pools, outdoor walking paths, and even a warm water therapy pool! I would support the recreation district in starting a smaller facility that can pay for itself, and then expand as needs present, but let’s not ask hard-working homeowners to pay for and operate a new recreation center at the present time, with construction costs at their highest.

Ary corporation dba Fremont Paving & Redi-Mix fully endorses the construction of a Recreation and Aquatics Center in Cañon City. We urge the voters in Fremont County to vote yes on 6A and 6B.

The approval of the rec center will enrich the quality of life for the residents of this community. In addition to the incredible outdoor amenities our community has, this rec center will give all citizens across the age spectrum opportunities for activities year-round. This will have a significant positive impact on the physical and mental health of citizens while providing social opportunities that will contribute to the strength and vibrancy of our population.

Not only will the recreation center contribute to the well-being of individuals, but the facility will also contribute to the overall contentment of the community. A positive quality of life will contribute to the economic health of Fremont County by creating several local jobs during and after construction. The positive economic impact will not stop there.

The rec center will help attract families, businesses, and generate additional tourism activity year-round. Furthermore, the rec center will help retain the young families and small businesses moving to the area that will be essential for the future health of our community.

For these reasons, Fremont Paving & Redi-Mix supports and endorses the Cañon City Recreation and Aquatics Center and encourages all voters to vote yes on 6A and 6B.

John Paul Ary,
Owner Fremont Paving & Redi-Mix
